Elements & Principles of Art

Elements and Principles of Art

Description:

For this project we were to find and take pictures of things in nature or in our environment to represent the different elements and principles of art, as we were taught in class. For
this project a focused on pictures that kindergarteners would be able to recognize and understand terms based on the level of definitions I provided in the PowerPoint presentation.

Value

This first image is representing value, as it is showing the lightness and darkness of the light pole and signs through a shadow.

Balance (Symmetry)

Balance (Symmetry): This image is representing the concept of balance, specifically symmetry. I defined a symmetrical as "if something were to be cut in half (through the center) and both sides appear to be equal in shape." In this instance, the stem serves as the center, showing that each half is equal in shape.

Color

This image presents all the different colors we have including the primary and secondary colors, which are the most important color groups kindergarten students should be able to know and understand. However, this image can give students an understanding of the three main components that make up a color, its name (hue), its lightness and darkness (value), and its intensity (purity of hue).

Unity/Variety

This image is used to represent both unity and variety. I described this image as having unity because all of the elements (produce) are a vegetables;  however, this image also represents variety because each element is not the same type of vegetable.

Emphasis

Finally, this image is representing the concept of emphasis. Emphasis is defines as a "focal point," the first thing that catches the eye. This image portrays emphasis because in the midst of a group of red apples, is one green apple. I also chose this idea of putting a green apple among red apples because red and green are contrasting colors, so to make something an even more emphasized focal point incorporating a contrasting color component can help something stand out even more.

Extension Activity:

For an extension activity, I would focus on one specific element or principle. If I were teaching Pre-K, K-2, I would maybe have the students each bring a different type of texture and we would together create a sensory bulletin board for students to use (when necessary). Having a sensory compilation such as this, I would use this as an opportunity to discuss the five senses, especially touch. I have attached an image of what a potential sensory bulletin board could look like in the classroom where students can utilize these different texture items.
