2D Design: Paper Weaving
Description:
This activity was a fun way of combining the visual perception and art into one. During this lesson the main focus area was the study of opt art which is important to better understand the concept of how things relate to the things we see. We began this project by folding our piece of construction paper in half and cut lines starting at the fold and cutting until reaching the stopping point we had drawn onto the opposite end of the folded paper (which was about one inch down from the edge). Once each line was cut we unfolded the paper and started weaving our strips of paper through (ones cut from a piece of different color construction paper). When weaving, it was important to alternate each strip of paper so that each piece would contribute to creating the illusion effect. Through the process of weaving we were able to see how different colors and alternating actions all interreacted with one another to give us our intended result.
Extension Activity:
I think for an extension activity I would emphasize the measurement aspect. Instead of having certain parts of this activity already measured, cut out, and prepared, I would have the students each spend time measuring out their materials based on the measurements I provide them. having the students measure out their own pieces for this lesson can not only expand on measurement skills, but also can give opportunity for students to be motivated to carefully pay attention to expected measurements, the specific placement of each measurement so that their project is successfully executed and completed. Then this art project can give students the opportunity to enhance their math skills and knowledge in a fun, more hands-on way.
