The Dot
"Dot Day" Activity
Description:
For this activity, we were introduced to the book The Dot. This book teaches students that art is not right or wrong, it is what you as the creator make it. So, for this project we were provided a coffee filter, piece of tin foil, and crayons and were instructed to decorate/design a dot without restrictions or specific guidelines (other than using the correct materials/media). It is important for students to have opportunity to just be creative in their own ways without limitations to ideas and this activity allowed for us to come up with our own creative way to decorate our dot using crayon (for crayon resistant watercolor technique) and experiment other different watercolor techniques briefly.
Extension Activity:
To celebrate "Dot Day," another activity I would incorporate, especially in grades Pre-K, K-1, dot art painters for students to create letters of the alphabet or numbers. Hand-held dot art painters helps students improve their fine motor skills and are able to experiment with mark making and artistic expression through color choice. Or I would have the students create a dot design using dot are painters. I have attached an image of a dot art letter template students could trace or develop a letter on their own and an image of a dot using paint dotters.
