Van Gogh Inspired Collage

Van Gogh Starry Night Inspired Collage

 Description:

This art project was intended to help learn more about the artist Vincent Van Gogh and his work, specifically his famous Starry Night. The goal of this project was to use the technique of movement and a silhouette similar to Van Gogh's. For starters we were to create a background using strips of tissue paper and pasting them down with a gel medium (underneath and over the top of the tissue paper to create a smooth surface to use an oil pastel for the movement aspect of the project). After applying the gel medium and a day of drying, we then were expected to create a landscape silhouette; I had chosen to do an old haunted house, broken fence, and a full moon illustrating a "Halloween Night." Once the landscape silhouettes were placed and secure where I wanted them, I used an oil pastel crayon to create cloud like swirls portraying wind or movement in the night sky resembling Van Gogh's work in Starry Night.

Extension Activity:

To extend this art lesson I would have students choose three things they found interesting from the PowerPoint lesson about Van Gogh, similar to the one we had done prior to starting our art project. With their three interesting facts I would have them further elaborate on why they found that fact to be interesting and how they think that fact could have impacted his art work, as well as giving a short description of what inspired or directed their idea for their very own "Starry Night."  When the students have completed both their art work and their short summary of their three facts, we would set up an art gallery for students to walk around to look at each others pieces of art and writings.
